You’re Ready to Redecorate a Room but Choosing the Right Colour and Style Feels Daunting: How to Move your Project Forwards

We’ve all been there.

You know you want to redecorate a room but deciding on the right colour palette and style can feel overwhelming. With so many different options and choice - and colour swatches don’t help because there are too many gorgeous colours to choose from - it’s easy to get stuck (and often give up), before you’ve even started!

So how do you move your project forwards?

The most effective (and fun) way to move forward is to draw on what inspires you and create a mood board.

What is a mood board?

A mood board is collection of images, textures and colours that catch your eye. They don’t have to be room specific and can even be a random collection of ideas rather than perfectly thought through. Mood boards are merely a way to capture what inspires you in one place.  And over time, you will see a trend towards a certain direction, a certain “look” or style and colour palette.

To create your mood board, consider including:

·         Completed rooms that appeal
·         Photos from nature - plants, flowers, wildlife etc
·         Furniture or accessories
·         Artwork that sparks interest
·         Flooring, paint finishes or cabinetry samples
·         Colour swatches
·         Fabric samples

By pulling these elements together, you create a visual springboard that will help navigate the endless options!

Sources of inspiration

We often draw inspiration from home interiors magazines or from watching interior design programmes on TV, however ideas really can spring up from anywhere. So always have your camera ready and a notebook!

Shop Windows

Shop windows are designed to catch your eye and entice you in.  Next time this happens, ask yourself why? Is it the colour combination, the mix of textures or simply just the overall look of the display? We are inspired and motivated all the time, it’s just a case of asking yourself why and banking that information for your mood board.

Nature

Nature is an amazing source of inspiration, particularly in terms of colour and texture. As we move into Autumn, there is richness, warmth and earthiness to the colours around us. Not a fan of rusty reds and zesty orange?  No problem!  Move down the colour scale towards the richer, earthy browns and mossy greens and come up the other side into lighter greens, pinks and purples…

Fashion trends

You only need a quick wander along the high street to get a sense of which colours are “in” this season. Clothing stores do a great job of layering colours and playing with textures which may inspire you to try certain shades on your walls or different textures in your soft furnishings.

Architecture

Sometimes, just walking outside and looking up and around can spark ideas.  Architectural styles, painted doors and even local cafes or murals can inspire.

Bringing it all together

Creating a mood board allows you to explore and experiment without any commitment. By pulling together images that inspire you, you will create a clearer picture of your style and colour preferences. From here you will have more confidence in selecting the right colours, finishes and furnishings to create your perfect space.
